About Us
As formal education in arts and entertainment vanish from public schools, many youth in the community have largely wasted their existing artistic talent, as they are unable to make the leap from amateur productions to professional assignments. Arte Calidad Cultural Institute will expose these talented individuals to various medium and often nontraditional art forms and offer them full-time career opportunities in the art and entertainment industries.
Mission Statement
The mission of Arte Calidad Cultural Institute is to provide job training in commercial and traditional art; entertainment set design and production for all youth seeking employment in the arts and entertainment industries.
Background
Arte Calidad Cultural Institute, a non-profit organization, is the brainchild of Los Angeles paper mache artist, Tony Dominguez. It was established in East Los Angeles in 1994 after a decade of manufacturing pinatas and large paper mache figures, known as Judas or Mojigangas.
Founder Tony Dominguez
After 12 years as a baker, Tony Dominguez worked as a production supervisor for Cinema Secrets (a Hollywood prop company) where he collaborated in such films as Dracula, Water World, Apollo XIII, Casper, Barbwire, The Mask and Stargate among others. Since 1994, he started producing piflatas for retail businesses. Soon after, he realized there was a growing demand for Latino art productions and he expanded his services to include paper mache.
Our Innovative Paper Mache
Arte Calidad has been revamping the techniques of paper mache since 1994 and is renowned for its production of Judas or Mojigan gas. Mexico’s special traditions of paper mache are those that Arte Calidad has built upon and transformed into what today is a very innovative style that combines a traditional method with contemporary building techniques.
